In 1994, rabies was confirmed in 43 foxes and 18 domestic animals coll
ected in a border region in southern Belgium, These cases demonstrated
a reinfection in an area previously freed from rabies by fox vaccinat
ion campaigns. Two campaigns of fox vaccination in a restricted area c
arried out in 1994 were not able to stop the spread from initial outbr
eak. Several factors, e,g, the high density of fox population, could e
xplain a too low rate of vaccine-bait uptake. Regarding the current ep
idemiological situation, alternative strategies of bait distribution a
re proposed.
