Abstract
Personal identity is a philosophical and psychological concept of grea t complexity whose theoretical ambiguities add to the confusion surrou nding the contested condition now entitled dissociative identity disor der. Although fundamental skepticism continues over questions of valid ity, recent research on this disorder has clarified risk factors and r efined diagnostic measures.
