Unemployment is one of the key characteristics of Britain's inner citi
es, This paper examines labour market processes and their policy impli
cations within an inner-city and a suburban area of an economically de
pressed city in England, Sheffield, Five major themes are examined: ma
rkedly contrasting unemployment rates within the two areas and their p
olicy implications; job barriers, aspirations and opportunities; skill
s attainment and training issues; differential unemployment rates affe
cting specific socio-economic groups in each locality; and questions s
urrounding poverty.
