A Monte Carlo method was developed to simulate the interaction of an e
lectron beam with a nonuniform gas flow. The model was used to determi
ne the three-dimensional distribution of rates of ionization and excit
ation of C (3) Pi(u) in nitrogen. The results indicate that ionization
in a jet occurred much less efficiently than in uniform flow. It was
shown that isotropic scattering and no electron beam degradation shoul
d be considered when modeling the interaction of a high-energy electro
n beam with a low density jet.
