Time and locally specific poverty lines for Brazilian metropolitan are
as, which concentrate a third of the country's population, are used he
re to examine the proportion of poor along the short-term cycles typic
al of economic evolution in the 1980s. Although the sensibility of pov
erty to the cycle is high, its long-term effect was neutral in terms o
f incidence of poverty from the income point of view, but clearly adve
rse when labour market indicators were considered. National Household
Sampling Survey data combined with poverty lines allowed for the const
ruction of labour indicators both for poor and nonpoor subpopulations,
which provide clues to understanding income-earning strategies under
changing economic and demographic conditions.
