Va. Volkov et al., NUTRITIONAL-STATUS AND CORONARY-ARTERY AT HEROSCLEROSIS (REPEATED EPIDEMIOLOGIC PATHOMORPHOLOGICAL STUDIES IN 5 EUROPEAN TOWNS), Kardiologia, 35(5), 1995, pp. 43-46
The relationship between nutritional status and incidence of raised at
herosclerotic lesions was investigated in two epidemiological studies
of atherosclerosis based on pathomorphological data which were conduct
ed in several European towns (Malmo, Prague, Riga, Tallinn and Yalta)
with an interval of 20 - 25 years. The first study was conducted in 19
63 - 1968 and the second - in 1985 - 1988. Men aged 20 - 59 years were
included in Malmo, Prague, Riga, Tallin and Yalta (n=4263 and n=4138
in first and second studies, respectively) and women aged 40 - 49 year
s - in Malmo, Prague and Yalta (n=778 and n=706 in 1st and 2nd studies
, respectively). Mean values of subcutaneous fat and Ketle index were
highest in Riga and lowest in Malmo. In man index of Ketle (body mass
index) was significantly related to area of raised lesions and to sten
oses in coronary arteries irrespective of concomitant arterial hyperte
nsion or diabetes. In women this relation was not significant.
