We explore consequences of a rearrangement of the Fermi surface that s
trong correlations may produce in an anisotropic electron liquid embed
ded in a crystalline field. Based on a Fermi liquid approach, an expla
nation is developed for the practically straight segments of the Fermi
line that are observed experimentally near the (0, pi) and (pi, 0) po
ints in layered compounds such as YBa2Cu3O6.9 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8.
