Abstract
It is shown that the classical entropy does not increase monotonically for an isolated fluid in which sound waves are attenuated according t o a relaxational evolution equation. In contrast, the generalized entr opy of extended irreversible thermodynamics does show a monotonic incr ease and is therefore more suitable for the description of relaxation- time phenomena in fluid systems.
