The influence of various components of a plastic scintillator (high co
ncentrations of primary dopant, secondary fluor, diffusion enhancer an
d stabilizer) on its radiation hardness has been experimentally determ
ined, The diffusion enhancing technique was shown to be the most power
ful tool for improving radiation hardness. A new polystyrene scintilla
tor that decreases its light output by only 4% after 2.8 Mrad irradiat
ion has been produced.
