Abstract
The first fibre-optic Raman amplifier of signals for wavelengths in th e range 1.3 mu m was developed. The gain achieved was 30 dB when pumpe d with 350 mW of 1.24 mu m radiation. A high amplification efficiency was achieved when the active medium was a large-aperture low-loss sing le-mode optical fibre made of quartz glass with an enhanced germanium content in the core.
