Eb. Bohlke, NOTES ON THE MURAENID GENERA STROPHIDON, LYCODONTIS, SIDEREA, THYRSOIDEA, AND PSEUDECHIDNA, WITH A REDESCRIPTION OF MURAENA-THYRSOIDEA RICHARDSON, 1845, Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 146, 1995, pp. 459-466
Type species for the muraenid genera Strophidon, Lycodontis, Siderea,
Thyrsoidea, and Pseudechidna have been erroneously indicated in past l
iterature, as well as in recent keys to genera of the Muraenidae. The
history of the generic names is reviewed, and type species found to be
the following: Strophidon (type species Strophidon longicaudata McCle
lland); Lycodontis (Strophidon literata McClelland); Siderea (Muraena
siderea Richardson); Thyrsoidea (Muraena thyrsoidea Richardson); and P
seudechidna (Muraena brummeri Bleeker). Brief diagnoses are given for
genera as currently applied. The type specimens for Muraena thyrsoidea
Richardson and Muraena prosopeion Bleeker are redescribed.
