Sum rules relating the masses of ground-state baryons and mesons are o
btained in a constituent quark model, but it is argued that the formul
as are more general than the model that motivates them. The relation o
f one of the formulas to heavy quark theory is discussed. Where precis
e data are available, the sum rules agree with experiment to better th
an 1%. One of the sum rules agrees with new preliminary measurements o
f masses of b-quark baryons.
