ANTIFUNGAL ARYLTETRALIN LIGNANS FROM LEAVES OF PODOPHYLLUM-HEXANDRUM

Two aryltetralin lignans, 4'-O-demethyldehydropodophyllotoxin and picr opodophyllone, which were earlier reported as semi-synthetic products, were isolated from the leaves of Podophyllum hexandrum of Pakistani o rigin. Two known aryltetralin lignans, isopicropodophyllone and dehydr opodophyllotoxin, were also isolated. Structures were identified by sp ectroscopic methods. The two new lignans showed strong antifungal acti vity against Epidermophyton floccosum, Curvularia lunata, Nigrospora o ryzae, Microsporum canis, Allescheria boydii and Pleurotus ostreatus, while picropodophyllone also showed activity against Drechslera rostra ta.
