Abstract
The object of this Note is to provide a prosopographical analysis of t he eighteenth-century scientific community with a view to explaining t he gradual breakdown over the course of that century of the traditiona l general categories of 'natural philosophy' and 'natural history', an d their replacement by a wide range of separate scientific disciplines .
