Data on 876 juvenile offenders in sir different jurisdictions are exam
ined to see if there are different outcomes of restitution, probation,
or incarceration based on the locale. The data are from an excellent
investigation by Schneider and Ervin (1990). However, they did not foc
us on this part of their data. The results show widely discrepant outc
omes, which brings into question the fairness of the sentences. Some l
ocales never or almost never incarcerated anyone, while in Ada County
(Boise), Idaho 61 percent of the offenders received incarceration and
none received probation.
