The authors propose a tunable arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) laser co
nstructed using an AWG multiplexer with the minimum number of inputs/o
utputs and laser diode (LD) amplifiers fewer than the desired number o
f wavelengths. The fabricated 1.55 mu m tunable AWG laser is shown to
oscillate successfully at 32 wavelengths with a 0.8 nm wavelength spac
ing in accordance with the design.
