Abstract
Reliable in situ testing during soil exploration is of great help to g eotechnical engineers in design considerations. This paper describes t he theory and the laboratory test results for determination of the den sity of a sand with a quasi-static penetrometer by measuring its therm al conductivity. Effects of disturbance caused by the penetrometer hav e been studied. It is shown that it is possible to obtain the density of sand by precalibrating the penetrometer.
