Abstract
Surveys of 62 pond sites near Market-Drayton, Shropshire, were carried out in September 1989 and April-September 1993 to determine the local distribution of the alpine newt Triturus alpestris, first introduced there in 1970-74. Triturus alpestris was found in garden and farm pond s up to 70 m from the original sites of liberation. Relative numbers a nd size-ranges of adult and larval Triturus species (alpestris, crista tus, vulgaris) are compared between study areas. The ecological and co nservation implications of T. alpestris in Britain are discussed.
