The syntheses of two new complexes, [Th(L)(2)(H2O)(2)](n). 2nH(2)O and
[Th(L)(2)](n) of thorium (IV), where L = isonaphthazarin (2,3-dihydro
xy-1,4-naphthalenedione) are reported. The IR, electronic, thermal and
electrical conductivity data suggest the formation of chain like poly
meric structures with the participation of carbonyl and hydroxyl group
s. A bicapped, square, antiprismatic arrangement having a coordination
number of 10 for the hydrated complex and a square, antiprismatic arr
angement having a coordination number 8 for the anhydrous complex arou
nd thorium has been suggested.
