Abstract
This paper discusses the continuing importance of philosophical questi ons for social science practice. Particular attention is paid to recen t contributions from realist philosophers who challenge the hitherto d ominant dispute between positivists and their critics. If philosophica l criticism is right, social scientists' understanding of and hopes fo r prediction will have to change.
