The methods of differential thermal analysis, metallography, and local
x-ray spectral analysis were used to study the contact melting upon h
eating and cooling at 80 deg/sec of binary powder mixtures of iron wit
h C, Cr, V, Cu, Mo, W, Hf Ta, Ti, Zr, B, Al, Si, and Nb. When systems
containing intermediate phases were heated, layers of these phases for
med at the interface. These processes were accompanied by exothermic e
ffects. If phase formation took place in the solid state the effects w
ere extended in temperature. When liquid eutectic phases appeared duri
ng heating, the exothermic effects were vigorous and proceeded in a na
rrow temperature range. The magnitude of the effects is determined by
the difference between the exothermal effects of intermediate phase fo
rmation and the endothermal effects of eutectic melting.
