This paper presents the results of laboratory scale experiments carrie
d out at CVRD Centre of Technology on the sulphation of Carajas mangan
ese ore using the classical method of pyrometallurgical reduction/leac
hing with sulphuric acid. In addition, the removal from impurities of
the resulting manganese sulphate solutions was studied by means of jar
osite and sulphide precipitation. The results obtained provide prelimi
nary data for the utilization of Carajas ore by the chemical industry,
and indicate that this ore is a suitable raw material for the manufac
ture of manganous sulphate and other manganese containing compounds.
