The plastic-crystalline transition and the melting temperature of trio
xane have been detected at ca. 50 and 64 degrees C, respectively, by p
ositron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Changes in the ortho-posit
ronium parameters, tau(3) and I-3, are correlated with the fluctuation
s occurring in the mean size and density, respectively, of the free vo
lume of trioxane during the solid-solid transition. targe variations i
n the mean free volume were detected at the plastic-crystalline transi
tion.
