Abstract
A number of triple chained ammonium amphiphiles have been synthesized with cyano- and nitrobiphenyl, and azobenzene mesogenic moieties at th e termini of their hydrophobic chains. These compounds exhibit liquid crystalline behaviour and form stable monolayers at the water-air inte rface. The monolayers give Z-type transfer onto hydrophilic quartz. Ho wever, the transferred material reorganizes and the morphology of the film appears to depend on the thermotropic properties. For the cyanoaz obenzene containing Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers, molecular reorganiz ation is observed upon irradiation with UV light or upon heating to gi ve well ordered, centrosymmetric, homeotropically aligned assemblies.
