The problem of documenting and archiving the characteristic tone quali
ty of the different pipe ranks of a historical organ is discussed Whil
e the musical quality of a certain instrument may be represented by re
cording organ concerts, the characteristic timbre of the pipe ranks ca
n be investigated by measuring and storing the spectra a and attacks o
f the individual pipes belonging to the rank. The effect of room reson
ances on the pipe tones are also investigated. Finally, the experience
s collected by the preparation of the first tone documentation in Naum
burg are revised.
