Abstract
A novel series-tapered nonlinear directional coupler is proposed to im prove all-optical switching characteristics. Its switching characteris tics are analyzed by using a beam propagation method based on the Gale rkin's finite element technique. It is presented that the critical pow er of the series-tapered nonlinear directional coupler is smaller than conventional uniform symmetric and tapered nonlinear directional coup lers.
