M. Siegrist, QUESTIONNAIRE OF ECOCENTRIC AND ANTHROPOC ENTRIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT, Zeitschrift fur Sozialpsychologie, 27(4), 1996, pp. 290-294
The present article describes a German version ofa questionnaire by Th
ompson & Barton (1994), which measures attitudes towards the environme
nt. Three scales measure ecocentrism, anthropocentrism and apathy towa
rds environmental issues. Ecocentric individuals protect nature becaus
e of its intrinsic value. Anthropocentric individuals protect nature,
because of its benefits for humans. Membership in environmental organi
zations correlated with the scores on attitudes towards the environmen
t, suggesting the validity of the questionnaire. 891 students filled o
ut the questionnaires.
