Abstract
Whether from a pragmatic managerial perspective or that of sophisticat ed psychological research, burnout has been the topic of diverse studi es and publications over the past two decades, especially in English s peaking countries. Yet, little attention has been paid to it in France . In this paper, we aim at reviewing the burnout concept as it has eme rged in the relevant literature. First, we link the evolution of the c oncept to the different notions of stress rooted in positivist or phen omenological intellectual traditions. Then, we present the main method ologies shortcomings are discussed. Finally, in the light of recent de velopments, we conclude by raising some issues for future research in the field of burnout.
