In a convenience sample of young people (aged 12-25) seeking help for
substance use, those preferring residential treatment had more mental
health and addiction problems than those preferring nonresidential tre
atment. Those seeking residential treatment were also more likely to h
ave had previous treatment experiences. Some clinical and research imp
lications are noted.
