The surface of a hot liquid metal held in a crucible appears to have a
dark central spot when viewed from above. A model has been developed
in which the size of this spot is described quantitatively by the surf
ace tension of the metal along with the dimensions of the crucible. Ex
periments that support the model have been carried out using liquid ir
on. It is suggested that the phenomenon could be the basis for an alte
rnative method of measuring surface tensions of liquid metals.
