The angular dependence of the magnetic linear dichroism in Fe and Co 3
p photoemission is investigated. The dichroism has the same symmetry b
ehavior as in the free atom, and vanishes when integrated over all ang
les. However, the angular dependence shows pronounced deviations from
the sin2 theta dependence of the free atom. The qualitative features c
an be understood in terms of a photoelectron diffraction picture, taki
ng into account the details of the final state wave functions with res
pect to angular momentum and magnetic quantum numbers.
