The synopsis includes 79 taxa of the family H y m e n o l e p i d i d
a e. Data on hosts, localities and the occurrence of cestodes in birds
and small mammals which have been collected in Slovakia since 1955 ar
e presented. Among the cestodes listed, Fimbriaria fasciolaris, Micros
omacanthus paracompressa, M. spiralibursata, Passerilepis crenata and
Sobolevicanthus gracilis are considered as species of the greatest bio
logical and economic importance. Hymenolepis diminuta, H. horrida, Neo
skrjabinolepis singularis, Vampirolepis asymetrica and y: nana, parasi
tic in small mammals, are also frequently occurring species. On the ot
her hand, Echinocotyle brachycephala, E. clerci, E. ryjikovi, Nadejdol
epis paranitidulans, Oschmarinolepis microcephala, Retinometra giranen
sis and Sobolevicanthus longistyleticus, found exclusively in Anas cly
peata, A. crecca, A. querquedula, Aythya nyroca and Ciconia ciconia, c
urrently endangered avian hosts, are very scarce hymenolepidids in Slo
vakia. The only endemic species of the group under consideration is Va
mpirolepis ampla. Vampirolepis ampla Erhardova, 1955, Echinocotyle pod
irufi Macko, 1962, Microsomacanthus spasskyorum Macko et Birova, 1983,
Sobolevicanthus aculeostyleticus Birova et Macko, 1991, Sobolevicanth
us longistyleticus Macko, 1992 are the new species described from the
territory of Slovakia.
