Nigritella buschmanniae TEPPNER & STER possesses red to pink or in lat
e anthesis sometimes also whitish flowers; the lip is more or less con
stricted - the lowermost flowers often excepted. The testa cells in th
e chalazal part of the seeds have wavy anticlinal walls. N. buschmanni
ae is pentaploid with 2n = 5x = 100 chromosomes and reproduces apomict
ically by autonomous adventitious embryos. Up till now it is known onl
y from mountains of the Brenta-Group (Southern Limestone Alps, Italy).
Morphologically the new species is related to N. widderi. Mrs. Adolfi
ne BUSCHMANN (May 24, 1908 - February 27, 1989) was a member of the st
aff of the Institute for Botany of the University of Graz (Austria, Eu
rope) during 1936 to 1969. Her specialities were systematics of Cerast
ium (Caryophyllaceae) and Poaceae (mainly Deschampsia und Pea) as well
as macrofungi.
