The most common diseases caused by larval cestodes, neurocysticerosis
and echinococcosis, are widespread in many developing countries. The c
ombined effects of improved diagnostic technology and increasing migra
tion from areas where these diseases are endemic to industrialized cou
ntries lead to continuing 'epidemics' of diagnosis of these diseases i
n both developing and industrialized countries. Applications of modern
radiologic imaging, immunologic diagnosis, and molecular biology are
providing new options for clinical management of these diseases, leadi
ng to re-evaluation of concepts of taxonomy and epidemiology.
