Abstract
A pilot study was undertaken to assess the predictive value of charact eristics possessed by coagulase-negative staphylococci in determining clinically important infection in premature neonates. No significant a ssociation was demonstrated between organism properties and clinical i ndices of infection. The routine use of simple measures of microbial c haracteristics in the assessment of neonatal septicaemia is not warran ted.
