Abstract
In an antiferroelectric liquid crystal MHPOBC, it was found, by observ ation of the surface of the free-standing film by means of X-ray diffr action, that at the surface the SmA(2)-type double layers, which produ ce a Bragg peak at half the angle of the fundamental reflection, devel op in all the phases, SmA, SmCalpha, SmC*, SmC(g)amma* and SmCA*.
