The paper is focused on the evaluation of the wave resistance of a shi
p moving in a layer of clean frictionless water overlaying a mud layer
. The Navier-Stokes equations, modeling the fluid mud, and the corresp
onding boundary conditions are linearized. The ship surface is replace
d by wave sources, and the potential of a unit source (Green function)
moving in the water layer is derived. Numerical results are presented
for a parabolic strut and for a body of revolution. It is demonstrate
d that the presence of a mud layer has a pronounced effect on the wave
resistance in a certain range of densimetric Froude numbers.
