Abstract
A captive aged male dusky titi monkey (Callicebus moloch) was diagnose d with Type II, non-insulin-dependent, diabetes mellitus based on pers istent hyperglycemia and elevated glycosylated hemoglobin levels. The animal did not show clinical signs of disease, although it did have a persistent hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. The oral hyp oglycemic agent glipizide (Glucotrol(TM), Pfizer Pratt Pharmaceuticals , Division of Pfizer, Inc., New York, New York 10017, USA) administere d at a dose of 1.25 mg/kg once daily resulted in an immediate reductio n of the animal's blood glucose to within the normal range, and mainta ined the animal in normoglycemia throughout the course of treatment. G lipizide should be considered as a potential therapy for Type II diabe tes in New World primates.
