Abstract
The superelastic scattering of electrons from a positive ion has been experimentally observed for the first time. A cross section of 12.0 x 10(-17) cm(2) was determined for the collisional quenching of the 1s(2 )2s2p(2) P-4 state of C+ at an energy of 3.5 eV. The principle of deta iled balancing is used to compare with an R-matrix calculation for the excitation collision strength to this state.
