Transparent Ba(La1/2Nb1/2)O-3-Pb(Zr, Ti)O-3 electrooptic ceramics (BLN
-PZT) were fabricated by the two-stage sintering method, and the optic
al and electrooptic properties were investigated for various compositi
ons. Refractive indices at 633 nm wavelength were about 2.4 for all co
mpositions, and a high optical transmittance of more than 56% at 633 n
m wavelength was observed for 9.0/65/35 composition. Linear and quadra
tic electrooptic coefficients, tau(C) and R, were 6.01x10(-10) m/V and
10.535x10(-16) m(2)/V-2, respectively, for 9.0/50/50 and 9.0/55/45 co
mpositions near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region.
