Interest in Bohr's complementarity principle has recently been revived
particularly because of several thought experiments and some actually
performed experiments to test the validity of mutual exclusiveness of
wave and particle properties. A critical review of the situation is u
ndertaken and it is pointed out that the problem, vith mutual exclusive
ness arises because of some vagueness in the conventional formulation.
An attempt is made to remove this vagueness by connecting the origin
of mutual exclusiveness to some principles of quantum mechanics. Accor
dingly, it becomes obvious that to contradict complementarity principl
e without contradicting quantum mechanics would be impossible. Some of
the recent experiments are critically analysed.
