A. Basseres et al., A NEW CLEANING PRODUCT FOR OILED BIRDS - LABORATORY AND METABOLIC TESTS AND INITIAL RESULTS OF FIELD-TESTS, Spill science & technology bulletin, 1(2), 1994, pp. 159-164
Recent research has resulted in a new product for cleaning oiled birds
that reduces the time to recover thermal insulation and is non-toxic.
In laboratory tests using duck feathers, 90% of oil was removed using
the new product vs 30% removal in control tests. Standard toxicity te
sting procedures were used to show product safety. The new product was
then tested using Sintef-Unimed techniques. The cleaning process was
easy and quick; birds recovered normal metabolic rate 1 day after clea
ning and thermal insulation 4 days after cleaning. Similar results wer
e obtained in a rehabilitation centre, where birds were also efficient
ly cleaned.
