Different aspects of enhancing the efficiency in using the ''Almaz'',
ERS-1, and ''Landsat-TM'' satellite data for the documentation of tund
ra ecosystems are discussed. Program modules for preprocessing ''Almaz
'' satellite data were developed, which make it possible to control th
e spatial resolution value, as well as the shape of the synthesized di
rectivity diagram (SDD), and to suppress the speckle noise with the he
lp of a set of adaptive filters. Different systems for classification
of the earth surface are proposed, based on the data on the a priori k
nown types of tundra vegetation and surface, and the efficiency of app
lying these systems in comprehensive treatment of terrestrial and sate
llite data is estimated. The results of classification of tundra ecosy
stems are presented.
