Abstract
This report analyses the capacity of ARPEL (Asistencia Reciproca Petro lera Empresarial Latinoamericana) Member Companies to confront an oil spill contingency on their shores, separately and collectively. The re sults show that the potential exists for preparing sensitivity maps to be utilized in the contingency plans. It can be concluded from this s tudy that the Latin American petroleum industry should orient itself t owards a regional cooperation which would strengthen institutional cap acity and maximize the effectiveness of government-industry collaborat ion in order to prevent and combat emergency situations.
