'Local corporatism' has been identified as a major factor in the rapid
growth of the Chinese economy. The institutional environment, ownersh
ip, political and social factors operate along with economic factors i
n explaining local corporatism and differences in the degree of corpor
atism of collective and private enterprises with local governments. Th
e differences lead to the distinction between collective and private e
nterprises in terms of organizational characteristics. This is confirm
ed by data from 132 rural enterprises in China.
