The electrochemical behavior of magnesium under the conditions imposed
by two standards, ASTM G 97-89 and NOM K109-1977 was investigated by
plotting current-voltage curves (Tafel diagrams) and by measurement of
electrochemical impedance. Under ASTM conditions, the increase in pro
tection with immersion time seems to provide evidence for the existenc
e of a protective layer over the surface. The layer was thought to con
sist of Mg(OH)(2). This protective film was not present under the expe
rimental conditions of the other standard.
