This paper describes the design of a high-voltage negative ion source
based on a magnetically insulated diode and generating microsecond pul
ses. Plane and cylindrical cathodes have been tested. The spatial and
angular distributions of negative ions in the beam have been measured.
The content of negative ions with different masses in the beam are gi
ven. The ion current density measured by a Faraday cup was up to 1 A/c
m(2) for the radial beam and 30-40 A/cm(2) for the displaced beam.
