This paper describes a technique for accurately measuring the velociti
es of domain walls under a stable effective magnetic field. An image o
f a domain with inverse magnetization is generated by a pulsed remagne
tization field at a point or Linear defect and is recorded using high-
speed photography. The dimensionless Gilbert damping parameter can be
derived from the domain-wall velocity measured as a function of the ef
fective magnetic field.
