The Authors have carried out a survey for the presence of Yersinia ent
erocolitica in 162 chicken carcasses and 155 samples of ground meat, g
iblets and raw sausages. The food samples were collected from two publ
ic canteens and various retail stores in the Urbino area. Y. enterocol
itica was isolated in 4.73% of the samples and all strains were biotyp
e 1. The research confirms a low presence of the microorganism in the
area examined and a scarce role of this foods in the spreading of micr
oorganisms and, therefore, in the occurrence of human gastroenteritis.
