The present paper reports the polymerization of styrene using diphenyl
zinc-zinc dichloride, Ph(2)Zn-ZnCl2, and diphenylzinc-copper dichlorid
e, Ph(2)Zn-CuCl2 systems. Our results indicate that additives, accordi
ng both to their nature and their molar ratio additive/Ph(2)Zn, are de
terminant regarding conversion to polymer. These systems generate at l
east two types of active species with bimodal molecular weight distrib
utions. The obtained polystyrene, PSt, were mostly atactic but the one
s obtained with Ph(2)Zn-ZnCl2 systems showed a melting temperature sig
nal at region over than 230 degrees C suggesting the presence of a por
tion of syndiotactic PSt.
